Multi-mode traffic optimization hits the road in Ohio

As of now, drivers in Dublin and Marysville, Ohio, experience reduced red-light delays and shorter travel times. Both Ohioan cities are the proud users of America’s first dynamic, multi-mode traffic optimization solution. The system signifies a giant leap ahead in traffic technology. With our smart AI FlowCube sensors it gathers real-time data about traffic at intersections, while performing thousands of simulations per second to calculate the optimal red times for the traffic lights. The revolutionary multi-mode traffic solution for Dublin and Marysville works with proven technology from our Dutch parent company Technolution, European market leader in traffic management technology.

Real-time data for optimal traffic light management

With over 180 AI-based FlowCube sensors installed at 44 intersections, we are gathering incredible amounts of real-time data. The data is fed into our Traffic Flow Engine, which performs 20,000 simulations per second in order to predict the traffic in the next two minutes. The results of the simulations are then used for calculating optimal traffic light settings. As the Traffic Flow Engine controls all intersections, the traffic lights of all intersections are tuned to each other for an even smoother traffic flow.

Increased safety for vulnerable road users

But a smoother traffic flow is not the only benefit of the system. Aimed at all traffic modes, the dynamic traffic optimization system will also increase safety for vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists. Thanks to the built-in AI, the FlowCube sensors will discern many types of traffic, including cars, heavy good vehicles, buses, cyclists and pedestrians. The system is even ready to register near miss traffic incident, providing new insights in the safety of the busiest locations in Marysville and Dublin. This extremely valuable information will be the basis for state-of-the-art traffic management policies.

Early results are in and they are great

Now that the dynamic multi-mode traffic optimization system is live, early results are in, and they are incredible. We are currently in the process of validating the data.

System dashboards will provide continuous intersection performance by traffic mode. Dublin and Marysville can deploy scenarios for handling specific circumstances like school zones or adjustments in the infrastructure, ensuring that the desired effect of the investment is achieved in real-time.

Taking great steps in traffic management

With the traffic optimization getting up to speed, Marysville and Dublin have taken great steps toward major enhancements in data-driven, dynamic traffic management. For TNL, this project has proven to be a valuable opportunity to demonstrate our thorough expertise and experience in the field of traffic management.
